Opening of river Trancão's pedestrian overpass

On Thursday, July 6th, the pedestrian overpass was opened by the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, together with the Mayor of Loures, Ricardo Leão, the Cardinal-Patriarch of Lisbon, D. Manuel Clemente and the President of the WYD Lisbon 2023 Foundation, D. Américo Aguiar.

River Trancão’s pedestrian overpass, which connects the cities of Lisbon and Loures, is now complete. Made mostly of wood and steel, suspended on four pillars founded on the banks of the river, it is intended as a pathway for both pedestrians and cyclists.

The 560-metre long overpass, located next to the main World Youth Day venue, is part of the Lisbon Region's network of pedestrian and cycling routes and follows the route coming from Parque das Nações, starting at Praça Gago Coutinho’s roundabout, and extending to Alameda dos Oceanos, Rua da Cotovia / Passeio do Trancão to the new overpass.

Then the route continues towards the municipality of Loures, encompassing the new riverside park and along a walkway as well as bike path and walking route to Alverca and Vila Franca de Xira.

The overpass will provide a link between three natural elements: the green areas in Lisbon, river Trancão and the green areas in Loures, sustainably enhancing this vast riverside area.

This is the first construction that has been completed for World Youth Day, "an investment that will bring lasting benefits for the city of Lisbon and the construction of the Lisbon metropolitan area", said Carlos Moedas.
