Zurik: Winner of world youth day's mural contest

“Drawing is something that fulfils me and makes me happy. I learnt graffiti art by myself. I didn't have anyone to teach me, I created my own form of art"

Zurik, 33 years old, was born in Bogotá, Colombia. She has a degree in Graphic Design and was the big winner of the contest to create a Mural for the Parish Hall of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Church, as part of WYD Lisbon 2023.

Zurik’s first street art experience was at the age of 19: "Since I started doing street art, I have never stopped. I base my lettering on geometric shapes, mainly circles. That is what sets me apart, my typeface.”

Zurik visited Lisbon in 2021 and has now returned for a brand new challenge in her career: "This contest was an opportunity to explore a theme that I am not related to, painting a church.”

For 7 days, she painted the mural that awarded her the victory: "Painting this mural was a great challenge. I had to represent, above all, a biblical narrative, which is very complicated, as it represents people's faith and the city of Lisbon.”
This mural tells the story of the "Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth, which represents joy, overcoming difficulties and gratitude. The city of Lisbon wanted it to have two interpretations according to sunlight: dawn, i.e. new beginnings and opportunities; and dusk, which means a new stage, where difficulties and sorrows are put behind.”

“It was very nice to come back to Lisbon; it's a very welcoming city.”
